Introduction to the Green Building Council

Welcome to the Volusia Building Industry Association’s Green Building Council web page.  The VBIA is pleased to be Volusia County’s green building leader!  Please visit our various pages, which provide an overview of green standards, upcoming events and other information vital to the green building movement in Volusia County!  Check back to this site often for regular updates on the latest Volusia County green building news and more!

“To proactively promote the benefits of sustainable, energy efficient and environmentally responsible building practices.  The council will present a variety of techniques, materials, resources and certification programs available to reach green standards, while providing leadership and seeking incentives for developers, builders, and consumers alike to encourage participation, which will lead to improvement of our environment, economy and building industry.”

    History

On October 9, 2007, the VBIA created the Green Building Task Force.  The Task Force, chaired by Bill Gallagher (Solar-Fit) worked for several months in an effort to create a model green building ordinance for local governments to adopt and implement.  The ordinance was based on the Florida Building Commission’s statewide model ordinance for local governments, but tailored to fit Volusia County’s various government jurisdictions.  Once the ordinance was complete, the VHBA launched the Green Building Initiative on August 31, 2008.  The Green Building Initiative was an effort to promote and educate our members and the general public on everything related to green building and development.  The initiative not only included the model green building ordinance for local governments, but also created the Green Building Council, this website and a commitment to host an annual green building expo for builders and residents alike. The Volusia Building Industry Association is proud to be Volusia County’s leader for “green” information, events, educational opportunities and public policy development!
