Applebee’s on Williamson Blvd. In Ormond Beach won the title of the King of the Wing at the competition held June 14 on Manatee Island in Downtown Daytona Beach. Taking second place was the Original First Turn in Port Orange. Several hundred people attended the event hosted by the Volusia Home Builders Association. The event was co sponsored by the Hometown News, Miller Lite, Pepsi and WNDB.
Local judges included DJ Tremble from the WVYB, Dave Laing from WNDB 1150 AM, Doug Kosarek from WNDB 1150 AM and VHBA president Stan Janzen from Woodmark Construction. The judges participated in a blind judging and chose Applebee’s among numerous participating restaurants for the appearance, tenderness and flavor of their wings, as well as overall impression. Other competitors included Chili's (Daytona), Gene's Steak House, Grand Seas Resort, Hooter's, Ker's Wing House, Original First Turn, Plaza Resort & Spa, Pub 44, Stella's Skyline Café/Lulu's Oceanside Grill, Wing Zone, Wings, Pizza & Things.
"This was the inaugural King of the Wing competition and we feel as though the bar has been set for next year," said Stan Janzen, 2008 President of the VHBA. "It was a great way for our builders and their associates to showcase their homes and products during the ongoing festivities."
The King of the Wing featured all you could eat wings, music, and a free drink for the adults and face painting as well as a rock wall, slide and bounce house provided by Dolly’s Fun Toys for the kids. Be sure you attend the 2nd Annual King of the Wing to see if Applebee’s retains the throne!
